The Australian Open Women’s Snooker Championship was played at Mount Pritchard Community Club last weekend and attracted a quality field including the defending Champion from India in Chitra Magimairaj. Chitra demonstrated her skills during the Round Robin making the tournament high break of 90. In the final it was a very close affair between Chitra and Kathy Parashis (Aus) who was on a mission to win her tenth Australian Open title. Kathy led 3-1 before Chitra answered with a great 72 break to go 3-2 down. The sixth frame saw a deal of safety, and then Chitra made a 56 to lead comfortably. Kathy was not finished yet and clawed her way back into the frame to tie the scores and go to a re-spotted black. After both players had visits to the table Kathy got an opportunity and potted the black to win her tenth title 4-2. The final was one of the best women’s finals I have ever seen, and credit to both players for showing us that the women’s game is on the rise.
